Ubuntu 9.10 constantly rebooting after replacing the AMD processor

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and it was running just fine. Then I replaced the old processor with an AMD Phenom II X2 545 Dual Core ProcessorHDX545WFGIBOX- 3.00GHz, 6MB Cache. Now the computer is rebooting itself all the time. I couldn't get 9.10 to reinstall so I tried 9.04 with did install, but still has the same problems. I wiped the disk clean and installed Windows XP which runs just fine and no reboots at all. Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

In this context, what are you looking for in the BIOS settings?

Many main boards require bios updates for supporting the Phenom.

In ASUS boards, new things may need to be set incl ganged/unganged mode

CPU clock etc may be 'fixed' without updates in others
