One program I've had great success with in this area is BitPim--which should be available in the main Ubuntu repository (I know it's in Debian main). Since you haven't mentioned the model of your RAZR, I can't give you terribly specific information, but I just answered
another post regarding the V3m.
After installing and starting BitPim, click the "Edit Settings" button on the toolbar. Uncheck "Detect phone at bitpim startup", as that probably won't work with your phone. Select your phone model next to "Phone Type" or use the "Phone Wizard..." (but for a RAZR the wizard is probably not necessary). Click "Browse..." next to "COM Port", find a USB modem (e.g. /dev/ttyACM0) under "Available Ports", and click "OK". Click "OK", and then on the toolbar click the "Phone Info" button to find out if your settings are correct. Your "Model" field may differ from your actual model, but don't worry about that. If you get information about your Motorola phone without errors, then you're good to go.
