moto4lin can not connect to motorola v3m

Yes, I know they are old, but I will probably have my v3m for a while. I would like to connect to it to transfer ring tones, pictures, and contacts, etc.

moto4lin installed and runs fine. I have assigned the device id's and device file name. I get a message when I plug and unplug the phone so I know I have the correct addressability.

When I press the connect/disconnect button, I get
Code:
[info] Phone is unpluged. Please connect it
[info] Phone pluged as P2K
Try to connect
[error] Unable to connect
My terminal screen shows
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# moto4lin
Form1
PhoneMan
New mode: 2
doActConnect
doActConnect
P2kProc::doConnect()
(E_openPhone: Unable to claim the interface)
[root@localhost ~]#
Before someone jumps on me for running as root, there are posts all over the internet that indicates that root is required.

I think I have tried everything but what works.

If it matters, I am on PCLinuxOS 2010.1

I have the same phone, and I was never able to get moto4lin to connect to it. Though this was maybe a year ago that I tried moto4lin, so I don't remember what the exact problem was.

Recently I tried BitPim with some success. It's a nice program, and with the V3m it can transfer pictures and contacts. And you can view, backup, and restore all or part of the filesystem. However, through the GUI it can't transfer videos, sounds, calendar events, SMS messages, or call logs. You can at least find these things in the filesystem. SMS data is under /brew/mod/syncom2/ (but text messages are stored in binary database files, the format of which I've been unable to crack). Sounds/ringtones are under /motorola/shared/audio/. It appears the calendar and notepad are each in single files under /brew/mod/landsat/tools/. Pictures and videos are under /motorola/share/picture/ and /motorola/share/video/, respectively.

When you start BitPim, click the "Edit Settings" button on the toolbar. Uncheck "Detect phone at bitpim startup", as that doesn't seem to work with this phone. Select "V3m" next to "Phone Type". Click "Browse..." next to "COM Port", find a USB modem (e.g. /dev/ttyACM0) under "Available Ports", and click "OK". Click "OK", and then on the toolbar click the "Phone Info" button to find out if your settings are correct. You may see "V3c" next to "Model"; don't worry about that. If you get information about your Motorola phone without errors, then you're good to go. And to see the filesystem, go to "View" and check "View Filesystem".

Awesome. The only glitch I had with bitpim was that I needed to install an older version of libexpat than what I had.

I didn't get to play much with it tonight but I am looking forward to doing it tomorrow. I have to get some sleep and get up in about 6 hours.

Sigh! I can only do half of what I wanted to. I am able to get photos from my phone, but I can't install a new ringtone. Verizon has that blocked so you have to pay for their service to get new ringtones. I have one I made myself that I wanted to use.

I guess when I need to get a new phone I will change to a different provider. They will lose me as a customer for the same reason I don't do windows or apples.
