I don't have a TV card installed right now, so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure you need a tuner module. It should be loaded automatically by 'modprobe saa7134'. You should check the kernel logs for any errors when the saa7134 module is loaded (output of 'dmesg' command).
Also try adding tuner=x as suggested, trying different values for x.
Thanks for all of your help, by the way. Sorry I'm having such a difficult time. There is a module called tuner (i.e. /sbin/modprobe tuner type=5). Should I use that instead?
Sorry I'm not sure what that means. What did you do produce it?
Probably the best thing for you to do is get a copy of the driver source from the bytesex site mentioned earlier and have a look at the documentation. There is quite a bit on identifying hardware. In particular if your tuner (the big metal thing) has any labelling the listings given may help you ID it.
OK I guess the tuner module has no type option. But it does have a debug option, so try loading it with 'modprobe tuner debug=1'. Maybe this will give more informative error messages when you load saa7134 and it tries to find the tuner. saa7134 is supposed to figure out what type of tuner is in use automatically, but if it doesn't you need to modprobe saa7134 with a tuner=x option.
Unless you want to keep going in circles you should try to at least ID the tuner type by looking at the card, googling, manufacturers website or whatever. Or try knoppix, which has some of the best hardware detection around.
