Nvidia driver activated but not in use

In Ubuntu,
my nvidia 8400 GS driver was downloaded and installed, but it says that it is activated but not in use.
So, how to make it to be used?
The unity desktop does not work due to this problem.

And, I downloaded from nvidia website a file:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-280.13.run

But I can not install it at terminal.
Why?

it works after rebooting.

I am not sure why, sometimes the screen blip and becomes dark for a few seconds,
it just happened randomly.
Something wrong with Nvidia driver for linux?

You cant install the nVidia drivers with x running.

it was installed thru control center,
now it is working for unity desktop, but sometimes unstable, the screen goes blank.

Try installing second driver then from driver selection menu.
