No Sound Since OS Install

I have had no sound whatsoever since installing Ubuntu 11.10 x64 onto my brand new Dell XPS 17; I'm at my wits end. Here's what I've done so far:

1. Updated and upgraded the system and the distribution.
2. At the command line, tried
Code:
aplay -l
as well as
Code:
sudo aplay -l
with result
Code:
aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found...
3. Followed the troubleshooting procedure here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/So...otingProcedure

I didn't make it past step 1. After executing part2 of step 1 (which seems to have since been removed from the procedure), I no longer had access to alsamixer. Typing "alsamixer" or "amixer" at the command line gives me:

Code:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
4. Following procedure Ac of the troubleshooting guide here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1885240,
I can see that sound cards are apparently recognized in some way:
Code:
Sound cards recognized by the system:
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller [8086:1c20] (rev 05)
Sound cards recognized by ALSA:
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller [8086:1c20] (rev 05)
Sound cards recognized by ALSA, and activated:
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller [8086:1c20] (rev 05)
5. Tried to download sound modules, but get the error that they have not been found.

6. Looked for a BIOS setting to enable/disable the soundcard. There is none.

6. Tried to check if ALSA supports my sound card here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...x:Vendor-Intel

and I'm not sure it is supported; I don't know what the codes stand for. Actually, I don't even know which "Product" box to look in.

7. Filed bug on Launchpad, which has not had any replies so far:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...uestion/186757

What else can I do?
