Monitor Troubles on Dell Inspiron 8600

Hi, Finally got the Kernel Up and running and had little trouble installing Alps Touchpad/MS Intellimouse and the Cable Modem (Scientific Atlantic WebStar 2100). However the Monitor is giving me big problems. I have (from what windows tells me) a Hitachi 15.4" monitor - sold as a Dell 15.4 XVGA! and a couple of "Default" Monitors.

I have tried using the Latitude 600 settings, the Dell 1600 Laptop Settings and the Hitachi 15.5 and all have yielded the same result (necessitating 3 re-installs of the Kernel).

Anyone else got a similar Monitor and been able to successfuly set it up (preferable with a eForce FXGo 5600 card installed)? I also need the info it seems in Millimeters, again I have no idea what they are. I left these values blank and on rebooting ended up in the cinsole because $Display values were not set.

I would like also wth the above information in hand, to know the relative path to the SaX2 Utility so that I might be able to reset these values and get the hell out of the console environment. I was able to find and run the YaSTadminSession Tool in KDE3 but it did not offer any way f chaning my Display Values. All I got was a reprobe option for the GeForce.

Hope someone can help with this, would greatly appreciate it!

Hi there I had the same prob, but with a different monitor. I solved it through going to enter the monitor details through SaX2 (or YaST) you should be able to choose a standard VESA monitor with a resolution you know your monitor can handle.

Funnily enough I did just that.... I chose a Vesa 1600 x 1200 mode and downgraded the res to 1280 + 1050 or similar.
However I cannot configure it to the 1600 x 1050 res I'm used to in Windows without XConsole disallowing me to enter the desktop environment. Even at the 1280x1050 I still get the "NVIDIA taints the Kernel Message" but am allowed to enter the Desktop. I'd like to set up the Display as Described without the XConsole message....

This message occurs even though I recompiled the Kernel as described on the NVidia Site before changing the settings. At lease now I have the card configured with the nvidia driver as opposed to the "nv" default but obviously there's still something amiss if I'm getting the message as described.

Can anyone help?

Following a einstallation of the OS I now seem to have things more or less to my liking. For one thing this time the nvidia driver update installed without destroying my nice SUSE KDE login environment and from within I can close sessions, shutdown, turn off and restart just as you would in Windows. The gods must be smiling on this install, for the time being at least.

What puzzles me though is in configuring the Monitor a Dell 15.4 inch xvga monitor which is capable of handling screen res of 1600 plus x 1024. I have selected the VESA 1600 x 1200 60khz setting and yet am only allowed a 1400 x 1050 setting in Linux.

I don't dare mess around with the virtual resolution settings or Geometry settings til I learn more for fear of being hijacked by XServer once more.

Has anyone succesfully managed this configuration on their Inspiron under SUSE..... and how?

Thanks as always for your input
