Steps to scan negative/film on xsane

Hi all,

AMD 8-core cpu
32G RAM
1024M VRAM
Epson Perfection 3490 photo scanner
xsane
Host Ubuntu 12.04 desktop 64bit
Virtualizer Oracle VirtualBox

This is my first time scanning negative/film on Linux. Neither I have a Windows machine here. My old Epson scanner still works without problem on scanning photos.

Click Negative: Invert colors for scanning negatives button
Adjust Autoadjust gamma/brightness/contrast button

all without effect.

The scanned file is attached to this posting.

Please advise how to scan negative/film with xsane? Thanks

(I have considered installing Windows on a VM but I have no experience making a scanner working on it)

Regards
satimis

The best first step would be to try looking up your device. That appears to be an old device, according to Epson. They also have a driver for it..did you load it? Read the documentation on it? Did you try to look at the SANE supported scanner page, and notice the part about it requiring a non-free plugin to work properly????

You would, very obviously, load the Windows driver/software (from Epson's website), and use it.

Sorry I couldn't make it to work. Scanner couldn't be detected.

Finally I installed Windows 7 on an old SATA3 Maxtor 160G Hard drive, bare metal installation. Now I can scan both negatives and photo on my old Epson scanner (Perfection 3490 photo). The quality is excellent. I can scan upto 1200 dpi, but taking longer time.

Yesterday I visited Canon Show Room here requesting for a demonstration on CanoScan 9000F Mark II. In my opinion the quality on negative scanning won't be better than that of my old Epson scanner. But the scanning speed of the latter is faster.

Now I still can use my old Epson scanner scanning negatives. With the money saved I would buy a 240G SSD for running Window 7.

Wonderful!

satimis
