Opinions please? Have an iso I would like to torrent but is it good idea??

Hi,

So one of the PC Magazines, Maximum PC, out now had an awesome DVD included with it for the April 2011 issue. It has 33 Open Source software apps and utilities very useful to most PC users, especially Linux users. The only problem is they are all in .exe format. So I was wanting to share it will linuxtracker.org and other p2p sites but of course, I think the only way to make this happen is to mandate the use of Wine to install them. A couple I've already tried seem to function but is this a good idea and just post "Wine Needed for Linux Users" or is that going to annoy a lot of people perhaps? Any ideas?

Put it up as an .iso ?

Are these self-extracting .exe files ? If so, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, let alone my pc :}

Here's an example of how dangerous exe files can be:

Thanks for your community-minded spirit but why would anybody risk getting the utilities from either Maximum PC's DVD or your torrent of it when they can more safely get them from their official download sites?

ok, well for the 1st question, no they are not self extracting. For the 2nd response, trust me that I know a lot about the commonly used systems and their respositories, and in particular .rpms and while I or more experienced users could make or build an .rpm, a lot of these apps I see are new to me but do exist or could be a real pain for some of the newer users of like Fedora to install if they don't know how to manipulate rpm repos or use rpm fusion. And even one or two that I love from personal use I could only find on PcLinuxOS and that was it till recently Portage included overlays to include them. But anyhow I wil check them out throroughly in Xen actually since you all heightened my awareness to a couple of things so thanks for the words. trust me I even have created a GPT label partition regardless if I can get the EFI I want to replace my bios just because I despise Windows and even an msdos partition, that much. I would never risk tainting the glorious Linux with such things otherwise that were not suited for it to begin with.

I actually did a seach to see if I could figure out what these useful utilities are. I couldn't find a list in the (brief) search I did. I did find a copy of the Maximum PC april 2011 issue, but I didnt see a list of software on the cover DVD.

Could you post what software you are talking about? Most open source software has a linux version, its quite possible some, or even most of them are avaible from distro repos, or can be installed from packages or source code.

LOL, replace BIOS/MBR (IBM-microsoft) with UEFI/GPT (microsoft is still involved...)

Hi,

Red Hat and other Gnu/Linux are involved with 'UEFI'. 'UEFI' is not controlled by Microsoft!

To answer your question as well, as clarify, it is a total of 22 open source apps, not 33 like I mentioned. But yes, as the list of the software I speak of is:

7zip
Recuva
angband
calibre
ccleaner
dropbox
filezilla
firefox4b9
folding cpu console client
folding gpu client2
folding forums
gimp
handbrake
libreoffice
nobspodcast
notepadplus
paintnet
pcpitstop
pidgin
speccy
sumatra
teracopy
vlc
xboot

and that concludes the list. The DVD also contains 3 podcast that I guess Maximum PC did about some issue but I haven't listened to it.

Why not? Just open them with 7-zip (on Windows) or any of the other extractors that can read them.

Well it does indeed seem to be drawing some interest afterall!

As for John VV, if it's just curiosity's sake, I'm not going into all the specifics but I'm sure they can be found via Google.

However, if you just want the iso anyway for easily looking it over, send me a PM on here with you email address, and I will simple share it with you by Dropbox. I really am not working with it at all but doing other Gentoo related things but just let me know.

This thread could go on forever at this rate. Oh, and I don't use Mozilla myself but I think it is meaning Beta 4 Mozilla 9.

pcpitstop

speccy
sumatra
teracopy
vlc
xboot
Stuff that is already in my repos (debian sid)-
7zip, runs on linux. No frontend, theres various frontends that you can use.
angband
calibre
dropbox (sort of)
filezilla
firefox
gimp
handbrake
libreoffice
pidgin
vlc

Not in my repos, but has linux native versions-
Folding- Not that its 'useful' to most PC users anyway, its a nice way to use more electrical power for the benefit of a big university.
paintnet- There is (or was anyway) 'paint-mono', an unoffical port. Also there are tons of drawing/graphics programs for linux.

Stuff with existing linux tools-
ccleaner- Windows only, doesnt deal with linux filesystems, use bleachbit.
Recuva- Windows only, doesnt deal with linux filesystems, to many to mention
notepadplus- Too many to mention.
speccy- lshw, lshw-gtk, etc..
sumatra- Just another PDF reader. Decent, I used to use it with windows, but there are lots of PDF readers for linux.
xboot- UNetbootin or FUSBi.

Windows only (and possibly pointless)-
pcpitstop
teracopy

No idea, but I'm sure there are tools with linux to do the same thing-
nobspodcast

So why would anybody run any of that stuff from WINE? Or torrent the programs anyway, there will be newer versions avaible in almost all cases....

Cascade9,

Thank you for doing that! Thank you much! That will save me the time and kill the curiousity factor about all this so I can focus on fixing fixing my awesome Gentoo installation that I am having problems with, after upgrading to KDE 4.8. Seriously, I appreciate and anyone else will too. That must have taken you some time I'm sure but it's very helpful.
