everything was working fine, went to a website (www.ellula.com), netscape crashed, and now my sound doesn't work. here is a tail of /var/log/messages:

Apr 3 10:21:42 roadking last message repeated 19 times

I'm running 2.4.17 with an ess solo 1 sound card. do i have to unstick the DDMA mask bit? how would I do that?

it sounds like it might be a driver bug of some sort. does it still happen if you restart the system?

system restart

I tend to use system restart as a last resort. I did however try it in this situation. the problem still persists. a tail /var/log/messages now looks like it did yesterday. these messages seem to keep repeating!

kernel switch

the restart didn't fix this....however, i rebooted to my 2.4.7-10 kernel and sound happened when KDE started. so then, I booted back to 2.4.17 and now everything works? seems like the 2.4.17 driver was "stuck" and rebooting back to 2.4.17 didn't unstick it. booting to the different kernel unstuck it.

don't know that I can explain it, but this fixed it.

I thought ESS Solo-1 was unsupported. Where did you get drivers for it?
