keyboard not working graphics mode.....

Recently I have installed FC9 in my laptop Dell Inspiron 1420, It have Nvidia graphics card Ge Force 8-series.

FC9 X-server is not supporting available graphics driver provided by Nvidia.

So, I downgraded my X-server configuration from FC9 to FC8 and installed graphics driver as indicated in following link
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=188645

Everything went fine and graphics card is working fine. But I am not able to enter characters from keyboard except "Ctrl+Alt+<Function keys>". And I can work very well in Non-graphics mode. It's really annoying me.

Please tell me what should I need to change in X-server configuration file to rectify my problem.

Thanks in advance........

If you go into the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf there is a section for different keyboards. Try editing these values till you find something that works. I believe you can execute the commands from this tutorial in non-graphical mode. It should give you a blue screen with white lettering that asks you a series of questions and one of them is the keyboard layout.

First make a backup of the file so you can restore it to the way it was if your edits don't work out:
Code:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bk
I believe most distributions do this daily anyway but just wanted to make sure. Now to edit the xorg.conf file type:
Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I don't know anything about editing it or what will and won't work so I'm not the one to help you with HOW to edit the file. Hopefully you have time to read the documentation on xorg or someone who knows xorg is watching the thread.

Mogli the kmod-nvidia ( and the nvidia.run) do indeed support a GF 8000 card
there was no need to downgrade the fedora 9 xorg to the one in fedora 8

reinstall the fedora 9 xorg by undoing that "how to "
for a little bit of time i had my fedora 9 box downgraded ( until the nvidia drivers were upgraded to the new 7.4 xorg ) About 7 mo. ago ,for my GF 2 card ,i reinstalled the fedora 9 xorg

Thanks John VV
Already nvidia driver installation is over.... Is there anybody who can solve my problem without installing OS again. Because it took 2days to update my system (due to net speed). I think what ever problem I have is a small problem, but I am not able to solve it.... Please help me out ..

is the keyboard a usb or standard

from the first pose it sounds like a gnome issue
and it may be related to the xorg .

so you have reinstalled the fedora 9 xorg ( undoing the downgrade )
---
removed the " exclude" option in the *.repo files
and deleted the fedora 8.repo
reinstalled
Code:
su -
yum -y remove xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-server-common
rpm -e --nodeps --allmatches mesa-libGL mesa-libGLU mesa-libGL-devel mesa-libGLU-devel glx-utils mesa-dri-drivers
yum clean all
yum install xorg-x11-server-Xorg
yum groupinstall "X Window System"
yum install mesa-libGL mesa-libGLU mesa-libGL-devel mesa-libGLU-devel
-- optional --
yum install compiz-gnome compiz-fusion* gnome-compiz-manager ccsm
 -- then the driver --
yum install akmod-nvidia
------------------------

how many fedora 8 rpms are still installed from the down grade to the f8 xorg ,that might not have been replaced by the fedora 9 ones when you undid the downgrade . can you post the output of
Code:
rpm -qa | grep fc8

ok so you still have it downgraded to the fedora 8 xorg

DID you take into account the BIG RED WARNING on that forum page
Quote:
THE FOLLOWING IS NO LONGER NEEDED!!!
that 'how to' is SO OLD that it is woefully incomplete .
It dose not take into account the fedora 8 and f9 "newkey" repo 's ( the ones added after a server brake in )
"fedora-updates-newkey.repo"
nor dose it take into account the move to rpmfusion
rpmfusion-free.repo
rpmfusion-free-updates.repo
rpmfusion-nonfree.repo
rpmfusion-nonfree-updates.repo
----
that perl script ONLY changed the "fedora.repo" and "fedora-updates.repo"
did you by hand change the ones listed above by adding the "exclude " option to them

also the kmod-nvidia ( and the nvidia-180.run) for the Gforce 8000 cards ( except for about 1 week) works with the 7.4 xorg in fedora 9

seeing as there was never a need to downgrade and seeing as you can not connect to the net - to fix this
reinstall fedora 9 or install fedora 10
-------edit---------------
if you did not edit those repo's by hand then you will have BOTH the fedora 8 AND fedora 9 versions of some of the xorg rpm's installed ( in your list)
and that will brake things

I didn't changed anything by hand.... Ok I will install fc9. Initially I have tried fc10. Everything went well but after installation I tried to install 'nvidia.*.run'. for that I have executed "init 3" to kill graphics and network. Graphics were killed and it went into command line mode. But in this mode screen was filled with colorful special characteristics.... If there is any solution for this problem then I can go for fc10

first DO NOT USE THE " nvidia.*.run" unless you 100% MUST use it
use the akmod-nvidia or kmod-nvidia ( from the rpmfusion repo)

seeing as you did not change the "newkey" repos by hand you DO have a mix of fedora 8 and fedora 9 xorg installed . THIS WILL kill the OS

install fedora 10 then install the akmod-nvidia

Hi John VV,
Now I installed FC9, and updating the system. In fc9 in non-graphics mode "no colourful special characters" are coming.
You suggested above for fc10. will it work for fc9????
I have following two .run packages.
----> NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.11-pkg0.run
----> NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.11-pkg1.run
Is it possible to use any of the above...

FIRST WHY are you trying to install the legacy driver i am using for my 9 year old GeForce 2 mx 400 card ( i bought it in 2000 ) for a new gforce 8 card
install the kmod-nvidia the current driver for your card is " 180.29"
see the how to
" F10 & F9 Nvidia driver guides"
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=204752

as to installing fedora 10 ...
fedora 9 ,in just under 90 days, hits it's END OF LIFE and there WILL BE NO FURTHER SUPPORT FOR 9 EVER , no updates ,no security updates -- nothing.
