Angry Graphics mode not working for Mandrake 9.2

I am new to Linux. Being embedded system student, got interest in Linux and needs this OS.

I have few doubts. I use AMD Athalon 2000+ with ASUS motherboard and Nvidia Geforce 2 . RAM is 256 MB DDR.

I have sucessfully installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 and now facing following problem.

1) When booting from linux, system hangs while detecting network files and while APM daemon server. I have to forcibly use interactive setup to skip nework detection and then skipping APM daemon server.

2) System runs well in console mode. But, I can't shift it to graphical mode as when I give startx command, it gives following message

"execve failed for /etc/x11/x (errono 2)"

What is wrong with the system?

Also note that I tried to access x11 directory but when I give " cd x11 " command in etc directory, it says that " directory not avl" although I can see that directory x11 is present in etc folder( by typing command "ls" in etc folder).

Is this problem because of skipping APM daemon ? Also note that I am not able to install or run any other linux distributions e.g. Red Hat 7.2, Fedora. Only QNX (RTOS) which is similar to linux mode works on my PC in graphics mode.

Kindly consult.

In the console, run
XFdrake
to configure your X session

once you have X running, disable those offending services.

apm is power management
eth0 has a 5 minute timeout, if you don't use eth0 for internet, you can simply change
your ethernet card to inactive, again, when you get X running.
Neither would cause your X problem. DId you test your X session in the summary screen before you exited the install?

RO

On the other, it is X11, not x11

Dear RO,
Thanks for your help. I am now more careful towards capital and small letters. It is X11 not x11.

I used XFdrake and now trying to set display as following,

Selected Graphics card as nVidia Geforce 2 integrated and XFree 3.2.3 server, Resolution is 800x600 with 60 Hz and monitor 800x600 with 32bpp. However while testing this combination, screen turns out to be having lots of colourful dots - Total screen looks like having white background with lot of colourful dots. I have to reboot the system as nothing further I can do. I do not know how to stop this testing and come out and use other combination.

I have tried other combinations (changing resolution etc) by frequently rebooting the system and every time while testing the screen, same happens.

Do you know what is wrong with this? Also, Tell me how to come out of testing mode and try other combinations otherwise every time I have to reboot the system. My system is automatically detecting Nvidia display card. Does this mean that I do not have to reinstall drivers for the same?
If I have to install drivers for display, how to do it in shell (console) mode?

Thanks a lot for your help.

When you select test, it has a 30 second timer, it is waiting for your to acknowledge a button that says something like 'is this the correct setting'. It really should exit after 30 seconds or so. I don't know why your video doesn't 'just work' though.

Dear RO,

Now I am able to start x windows after trying with XFDrake.
Thanks for your help.

Can u help me?
