Ok, so all the confusion has been cleared up. We are not talking about the garden variety gnomes, but GNOME, k got it!
Now then, will Ubuntu be the first to adopt GNOME 3.0 beta in their stable release? After all, why stop with btrfs? Including an unfinished DE is the logical next step.
I think the bigger question is: How far is Canonical willing to go to create the world's most unstable Linux distro?
When did gnomes develop shells? They didn't have them when I was young. Have they been cross-breeding with tortoises? I think that's pretty sick and should be illegal.
Enough!!! It's the DE, and if you keep this up you won't even have the chance to join the group, for you will be banned beforehand.

OMG!!! That would be terrible! To be banned from joining a group I had no interest in. Congratulations, Kenny, your sense-of-humour bypass operation seems to have been successful.
If anybody is curious about what GNOME Shell (and for that matter, GNOME 3.0) is or will be like or how usable it is, they are welcome to come to an LQ social group I created for it. I decided to create this group because I know that it will be a very hot topic in the coming months, since GNOME 3's release is only about 4 months away.
Meh, seems like a lot of hype for the functionality it provides, and I don't see how it is really so "innovative".
But then again I've never really liked gnome, so I'm biased.
I installed gnome-shell-git via AUR, it kinda worked, but it's as if I didn't have 3D acceleration. My whole desktop literally went at around 0.2 fps (Yes, about 5-10 seconds between frames! I'm not exaggerating)!
I'm using the xf86-video-ati driver, and it provides 3D acceleration.

Which ATI graphics card do you have? My desktop has the ATI Radeon HD 4350, and it runs GNOME Shell smoothly. My old Radeon HD 2400 Pro also ran GS, albeit with a flickering screen when switching to the overview. Again: Which ATI card do you have? Maybe it's the hardware that's not fast enough for GNOME Shell, not the driver.
