to use Gaim with an yahoo account do this:
start Gaim>>Accounts>>Add Account>>then select Protocol "Yahoo" and enter you username, password and/or other options like "Auto-Login", "Remember password", using proxy server, ...

are you using GAIM 0.80 or 0.81? The older version doesn't support yahoo any more. You have to enter in the "Screen Name" field just your yahoo username without "@yahoo.com". Just [example] kallan and your password. "Alias" field can remain empty.

Try Gyach Enhanced
I have tried Y! Messenger for unix/linuz and IMHo it sucks. i Have tRied lOts of IM's and there's one that ive liked. its Gyach enhanced forked from The original Gyach. It has webcam support. And all the goodies.. vEry Compatible with Y!M..
