Is Mepis the same as Debian?

I just installed Mepis and am taking a liking to it and have always been interested in Debian. Are they the same thing or are they different. Sorry if that is a stupid question.

Mepis is a sub-distribution of Debian... The makers of Mepis created an install of Debian they liked. Mepis uses Debian packages, and can be apt-ed to an "official" Debian install.
