Why compile either when they can both be installed in Synaptic?

Just add unstable to your sources.list to get xorg and
#Debian KDE 3.4 Team updates
# deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.0/ ./
# deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.1/ ./
to get KDE.

Why add both the kde-3.4.0 and the kde-3.4.1? why not just the 3.4.1?

Have you experienced many serious problems upgrading and using KDE 3.4 with Debian? I've been thinking of doing it but I am nervous about all the bugs.
Thanks
