I'm just guessing here, but I suspect this is not software-related, but hardware-related.

My guess is that the computer sound system can only handle one thing at a time. I know that, when I've been using, say, YouTube and I go to start XMMS, I get an error from XMMS saying it can't find the soundcard. After I wait a few moments, XMMS can find the sound card.

How many soundcards do you have?

If I'm wrong, I hope someone corrects me.

Did you google the problem? There are multiple pages with possible solutions.
For example:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=101125
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/gam...unds-alsa.html
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155997
There are more, but it's 01:00 am here, so I don't have the energy to search for more...
Already sleeeeping...
