Slackware 64 Rocks!

Posted 07-10-2009 at 09:25 PM by stureedy

When I saw the announcement on Slackware.com that Slackware64-current had gone public, I had to try it. (I've been running Slackware as my primary OS--both desktop and server--for years.)

I downloaded the kernels, isolinux, and the slackware64 (packages) directories and begin reading.

OK, first step is to generate a boot CD. No problem! The directions in isolinux/README.TXT provided all the information I needed to make a boot DVD or CD. I opted to make a boot CD...

Lists, new users, and the thick of it all

One thing that really bugs me, is all of the "top ten" lists on various news sites. How many "top ten" lists do we need for Linux?

I just saw one top ten list that was "The top ten Linux wallpapers" and it should have read "The top ten Gnome wallpapers that have been around since dirt". I realize new users are happy and proud about their new operating system, but we really don't care about what you think are the best wallpapers.

Ok, really. LEARN TO SPELL before asking for help. If you cannot get your problem across to the people whom you want to help, then use google. Really, we cannot help you if you cannot ask.

This is what I am talking about:
OMGOMG!!!!!111!!! Halp Me NOW! I cannot Linus my screen IS BLACK! OMG My hard drive broke my WINDERZ! M$ IS trying to Make me go to teh linuz!Halp Nowz!

Now really, that is not real, but it resembles so many posts on different message boards...

Content producers dig Linux too!

Posted 06-08-2009 at 11:32 AM by erlik

Content creation used to be the stronghold of Apple and it's OSX operating system, but recently there have been signs that content producers are more and more attracted to Linux. What made me realize that creative software on Linux had made it with the content creation crowd is this poll on the DAZ Studio forums: more than 150 Daz Studio users would like to see a Linux version. What made it important is that DAZ Studio is not Blender: it is a program that is designed for "artistic" content...

Windows 7

Posted 06-08-2009 at 11:24 AM by pereb

Yes, I realize this is a Linux site, but I just have to talk about Windows 7 here for a minute. Anyone else tried it? Iím sure a lot of you have. Iíve been playing around with the release client on my old spare machine, and even though itís running on some old technology (Pentium 4 3.02 GHz, 1 GB ram Ė basically the minimum Microsoft recommends) I have to admit Iím pretty impressed with what Iíve seen so far.

As much as I generally am not a fan of Microsoftís OS, dealing with it...
