Version 140131 of LFA (Linux for All), 13.10, 64 bit, with Mate and four other Desktop Environments, is ready!

NEWS about LFA version 140131
1. The LFA ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run LFA from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I’ve found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious....

Forcing /var/lock/subsys file if init script didn't start a given service?

Posted 01-30-2014 at 03:46 PM by MensaWater

Today I was creating a new init script on RHEL6. This isn't something I've had to do often.

I ran into the common problem that although the new script successfully started and stopped the service from command line and also started it on reboot it did NOT stop it before the server went down when the shutdown was done.

The reason for that is because on RHEL they run a killall script that checks for files in /var/lock/subsys and only run the "stop" portion...

Run your Slackware 64 bit system with the latest kernel – 3.13.1!

Posted 01-30-2014 at 10:36 AM by exton (Exton's Blog)
Updated 01-30-2014 at 10:37 AM by exton

I have compiled a very useful (as I think) 64 bit kernel for Slackware 12.0 – 14.1 and/or all Slackware derivatives. For example Slax, Zenwalk, SlackEX and Exton|Defender. The kernel is compiled exactly the same way as Slackware’s latest kernel huge. “My” kernel 3.13.1-x86_64-exton has even more support for new hardware, etc. Kernel 3.13.1 is the latest stable kernel available from Kernel.org. Released yesterday (20140129).

HMRC or hmrc? The sensitive case of the taxman

Posted 01-28-2014 at 09:05 PM by trevorparsons
Updated 02-20-2014 at 08:25 AM by trevorparsons (Corrections following response from HMRC)

I do book-keeping for a couple of small organisations, each of which have a few employees. This financial year I started using payroll software provided by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC, the United Kingdom's tax collectors). It's called Basic PAYE Tools (BPT), and I'm pleased to say that a version is made available for those running Linux-based operating systems.

[Aside: I feel to a tiny extent responsible for the UK government no longer restricting services to users of...

Run from RAM using UNetbootin

Posted 01-27-2014 at 04:28 AM by exton (Exton's Blog)
Updated 01-29-2014 at 09:56 AM by exton

ExTiX 14, MeX Linux, LFA (Linux for ALL) and ExLight (among other “exton distributions”) can be installed to a USB stick with UNetbootin. I have now arranged it so that the aforementioned systems can run from RAM (superfast!). You just have to replace on file after the installation is ready. READ THIS:
