Before that done 6 years of system administration including a SCO UNIX Server and a couple of Windows Servers and dozens of workstations. The largest system was nearly 100 PC's, devices etc. at 3 locations with LAN and VPN's, Firewall and Phone via landline and VoIP.

Have fun, and maybe share your knowledge with me.

SYLPHEED - uses wrong program to open PDF files

Posted 01-30-2023 at 11:15 AM by error_401 (LINUX mostly DEBIAN - hardware and software)

Lately in Debian 11 with the stable version I encountered an issue with Sylpheed using the wrong software to open PDF files.

After reading through the manual here:

https://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/doc/manua...lpheed-14.html

I solved the problem at user level by making an entry at the top of the mailcap file.

The files location is: /etc/mailcap

It can only be edited by root. Sylpheed Manual 14.2 explains how the mailcap is used....

Updated 06-21-2022 at 02:53 AM by error_401 (Update NVIDIA, update 3 monitor setup)

Lately got this great display-tablet. It can be used either as a display mapped to the screen or as a separate monitor. When not connected to the VGA/HDMI it will act as a digitizer tablet inputting onto the active screen.

When connected to the HDMI/VGA it acts as a separate display. The problem now is that it mixes up the two screens for the input area as it does not know how to handle the different areas.

The information on the internet is not very specific and complicated...

Installation of Debian 9 via CD-ROM with an image including firmware.

ACER Aspire E5-571 with dual Celeron and 4GB RAM.
Pre-installed Windows 8.1 fully patched OCT 2017.

I will give a short overview only. You have to search for the single steps explanation on the internet and how to do a specific task if you do not know how.

Largest loss of time is to prepare Windows 8.1 for the installation.

0. Backup your stuff
1. Update...

Sometimes it happens that x won't start

Symptoms:
- No graphical interface login (kdm) (gdm) do not start
- Terminals are available except for #7 which normally is the x Server's
- When trying to start the x-Server from a console logged in as normal user we get errors
- Error is: unable to start core services

It may be a problem with a full harddisk.
It seems that the syslog can under some circumstances become quite large (several...
