ffmpeg - and why it mostly won't work for normal users

Since I've got a new compact digital camera about a year ago I have the trouble that it's internal format is .MTS

.MTS ? What the heck is that? A question a lot of people will come up with as not all of us are the video cracks and sooo knowledgeable about all that stuff.

So - what would work under Linux to do something useful with all your videos having an .mts format?

Searches will lead you to ffmpeg a very powerful tool for video conversion. But unless...

Have to get this off my head.

Today I've spent 4 1/2 hours on installing Windows and 35 minutes on Linux. Plus 4 hours in vain on a couple Zyxel USG 50 Routers setting up a VPN connection. Result = no worky!

I have promised a bit about the software I regularely install on my Linux machines. For brevity I give the program name which can be searched for on the internet and for the apt-get users the package name with wich to install as well as a short description why I install this software.

Old laptops love Linux

I'm using Linux on 2 own laptops and have installations running on 3 others.

One is a 7 year old siemens-nixdorf laptop used by a retired person for internet e-mail and a bit of card games. He loves it for the speed and ease of use. Especially the order of the programs in the very simple groups such as "Internet" "Multimedia" etc.
