Upgrading desktop 13.10 to 14.04

The Ubuntu website says 14.04 is available. I have Software Updater set to notify me of any new updates, but when I check for updates and update the system, it doesn't notify me. I have also tried the command line version sudo do-release-upgrade and it says "no new release found." I have tried both setting the updates source to 'server for New Zealand' (which is where I live) and to 'Main server.' Neither one seems able to find the new version.

My guess, (considering the large number of computers that may have to be upgraded) is that the number of computers being allowed to upgrade (at one time) is somehow rationed.
Total speculation on my part, I have no inside knowledge.

When you get around to upgrading, it would be interesting to hear how it went and how you like 14.04. I hope to upgrade my Wife's computer in a few days. It also has WindowsXP on it besides Ubuntu. I plan to wipe WindowsXP off the computer and do a clean install of 14.04.

Good Luck.

OK- you mean rationed by Ubuntu?? Hmm... maybe. Odd, though.

"Rationed" may not have been the best word. As speculative guess your computer could be getting a figurative "busy" signal for now as it attempts to poll Ubuntu's server. Just a guess on my part.

No, don't think so. It does updates just fine, from both sites (NZ and 'main').

It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma... Oh, wait, that's what Churchill said about Russia :-)

I ran across this comment today: "During releases Ubuntu.com uses a CDN to offload the load on the network of severs.". This references a Wikipedia article: Content delivery network. I learned something new today.

Thanks - OK, but that article says "For most people it's transparent."

I did always tell my mother I was different from other people :-)

Help

I ran the update to 14.04 today, and after waiting thru the 30 odd minutes while everything downloaded and then installed, I still have 13.10. I thought it did the right things, but apparently I missed something. What course now?

In my case I can't even get it to offer it to me.

Hmm... I wonder if I actually have 14.04 and the lsb_release -a command is lying to me? That command certainly claims I am on 13.10. Its output is:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 13.10
Release: 13.10
Codename: saucy

I wonder if there is any other diagnostic I could use.

Yee-haaarrrr!!! Don't know why. Just did a sudo do-release-upgrade and now - God and Ubuntu only know why - it's doing the upgrade.

Mysteries.

Anyway, it is solved.
