im new to ubuntu(linux) i havent tried the tool cause i dont know how to, dont know how to load a driver, all i know about the chipset is that its produced by ASUS and the mother boards name is P5B. And im using DHCP
O.K, to configure your ehternet card from Ubuntu desktop, go to System and Networking. You will get prompted for your password. Enter it, and you should get a Network-Admin window. In there, your ethernet card should be listed. It may be called eth0. You can configure DHCP, since you have a DHCP server ( in your router? ). You can also configure Default Gateway ( the IP address of your side of your router ) your DNS addresses, you can get them from the router, or another machine that works at that location, or your ISP; and Hosts, these are the IP adderesses of other machines on your local lan that you may want to communicate with.
If you can not see eth0, ( or some other name like eth1 ), then you probably don't have a driver loaded. Let me know how you make out with the config, and we'll go from there.
Networking has alwys been my favorite topic. I'd like to ask some questions first.
- Are you on a lan or connected directly to modem?
- What is the output of "ifconfig"?
- Can you ping your network card (get the IP address from ifconfig and type "ping [your IP address here]")?
- Can you ping www.google.com ("ping www.google.com")?
