ubuntu9.10 network-problems with empathy and firestarter

i just tried to create an account for empathy and get an error:
Quote:
NewGoogleTalk; network error.
i did a bit of google and installed firestarter, it gives me the same error-message:
Quote:
device eth0 is not ready, please check your device settings and make sure your internet-connection is running
.

my internet connection is running. whats wrong?
i removed network-manager-gnome, i re-installed it, i ran /etc/init.d/networking restart, i ran nmap on 127.0.0.1, which tells me about exactly one port being open, well: i tried what not....
Quote:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto dsl-provider
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider

mh, i just installed pidgin and it does work. is that simply a bug? but why doesnt firestarter work? OMG, so much to learn... :-)
thanks
