Unhappy Display problems in ubuntu9 on thinkpad

I own a sl400 lenovo thinkpad. I have installed ubuntu 9. I dont have nvidia card in my machine. when the resolution is 1024x768 the display fits the screen size. But since last 8 logins the screen size has reduced by 1 inch on both sides. Earlier this problem was solved by re-applying the display settings but this does not work and my screen is permanently reduced. even new accounts created on my machine have same problem.
