Ubuntu not installing propperly??

Well im new to linux (ubuntu) and a friend of mine told me I should try ubuntu. So I got it on cd and all and I booted from the cd. And it lead me to an ubuntu screen. The first selection was Start / Install ubuntu or something like I entered that and a black screen came up and at the bottom it said something (I cant understand what) Said something with 'Flag' and alot of numbers. And I left it like this for about 20 minutes. And it stayed like that. I just want to know how can I fix this so ubuntu can install propperly.. or is it suppose to do this?

I also tried reburning and it said error booting i/o (something like that) then it asked me if I wanted to reboot.

thanks, jay

if you provide the exact error message displayed on the screen that would help a lot

Let's see - which release of Ubuntu would that be: 6.06, 7.04, a different one?

Don't forget 6.10. LQ's mirrors still offers it.

Of course. The reason I wondered is because I ran into similar issues with both the 6.06 and alternate 6.10 cds - it could simply be a matter of the IDE controller not being recognized.
