ubuntu partitioning tool does not see external usb hard drive when installing ubuntu

My friend's usb hard is not showing up in the Ubuntu installer when I get to the part with the partitioner. If I do "sudo fdisk -l" the hard drive does not show, but "lsusb" does show it. How can I use the external usb hard drive? I will find out what the model number and who makes it is soon, but I won't know for a few days.

What does "cat /proc/partitions" give ???.
My Dapper system shows the usbkey I just inserted in "fdisk -l", but of course that is a full system, not the installer.

to enable modules from the boot prompt:

Install module.name_enabled=1

I don't know exactly which module you need for the USB HDD, but find out and load it at boot.
