Guess what.. . that's right Ubuntu froze/crashed/fell short or what have you Clyde Beatty.
I was using Ubuntu with Untiy and all seemed to be going relatively smoothly. I had Firefox opened an was on 'Got Linux' One of he followers of my thread here about my freezes posted a statement about burning an ISO onto to a usb stick. I believed I had something that would work but i was notsure of its name, i knew it began with the letters 'B' and 'r' So keeping Firefox open, I opened Dash and in the search barahd just typed in those two letters B an r, an that is when it all came tumbling down a full blow freeze/crash. Following 'Einstein's' definition of insane' I tried everting I'd tried before an as usually nothing worked. Except this time the screen went like what happens when you are watching an old VHS tape or an old DVD. If that was not bad enough the screen then went black.
I had no choice but to power the pc off using the power button on the Tower and reboot. When the login screen appeared an I saw my choices I did not hesiate and selected 'Gnome Fallback with no effects' which I am using now.
You can try to use gnome 3 with effects enabled and see whether it freezes or not. Your sort of problems sounds like it's a video driver issue. Do you use a proprietary or an open source one?
I learned I was using an open source driver. Here is how I learned this, a couple days ago more or less I posted my inquiry about my Ubuntu freezign/crashing on Launchpad. I heard from them and hey asked me to enter in a terminal this command:
I did and posted the results with Launchpad and here is what came up:

From all of this they determined that I had been using an open source driver. They suggested I use a Nvidia one instead, and so I downloaded one and now I am waiting to see if it will have made a difference? There were several to select from so I chose the one with the most updates. Now as I said whether this will stop Dash from crashing and or freezing is now a matter of waiting and crossing my fingers?

Use jockey (the 'hardware drivers' tool) and get the 'nvidia-current' (304.XX) drivers.
The one you've chosen is ok. The difference is that nvidia-304 uses the fixed drivers tested on Ubuntu during the distro release process while the nvidia-current-updates one can have a driver updated after the release. For now both drivers are the same. If you still have some problems you can try newer nvidia-310 version.
