Hi, I've had this on two completely different machines, an elderly laptop (Toshiba Satellite S2800, Intel 700 MHz CPU, 192 MB RAM, and I currently don't know which graphic card, Ubuntu 5.10) and and elderly
common personal computer (AMD 900 MHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, 32 MB NVidia graphic card, Ubuntu 6.06).
Every once a while, the computers would freeze. That is, mouse movement would get impossible, and the keyboard wouldn't work. As I've never heard the harddisk rattle after that point of
stop, I guess, it's not the graphics but a more basic system, such as reacting on the CPU heat...
On the laptop, I had this
everytime - in contrast to my other PC where this didn't occur for a long time. With this other PC, there appears to be a correlation with the outside temperature to me, which has been rising now as it's getting summer.
I've also removed the CPU, and after that, put it in again. (To be true, I've not been using heat-conductive paste when I put it in, again.)
So I think, this is Ubuntu, reacting on CPU heat.
My question is, how comes, Ubuntu freezes when the CPU gets too warm (
or do you have other ideas as for the cause of the freeze?)?
- Firstly, I read, computers would slow down in such cases, but not freeze.
- Secondly, slowing down or even freezing hasn't ever happened to my Windows hardware / software combinations.
Anyone's an idea what's going on?
- As always: Thanks. Your input is much appreciated!
