ubuntu 5.10 x86_64: mplayer/xine/... stop playing video after a couple of frames

Hi Guys,

Trying to get mplayer to play mpg and avi files, and having a hard time;

First tried with the files that come from universe/multiverse, then compiled
mplayer from source. Same result - it starts playing a couple of frames
without error, and then just stops, sitting there.

Xine shows the same behaviour, and I have no idea what could be wrong.
Any pointers from Multimedia experts?

Cheers,
Tink

Video is up to scratch, most recent NVidia binaries for amd64.

Maybe the sound-support for the A8V-MX isn't up to scratch still
in 2.6.15; I believed my sound to be working because watching
TV was possible, but then the receiver does that, and just loops
the output through the soundcard. Can't listen to mp3 either,
which probably brings the problem down to kernel level :/

Bummer.

Cheers,
Tink
