Totem Movie Player in Ubuntu 10.04

When ever I installed Ubuntu 8.04 in the past and now installed 10.04 at present I see that always I have to install kodec or extra plug inn for Totem Movie Player 2.30.0. My question is that why we have to install extra plug inn to watch a video program specially in a Operating system that is most important and why not there by default in Ubuntu distributions like a video software?

Because some codecs have patents.

craigevil is part right This applies in THE GOOD OLE USA and Japan
Most Other Countries and The EU Don't care for Software Patents If you want a Distro that have everything installed and works on Install Try Linux Mint 9 http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
Download The MAIN DVD Burn ISO and Check it out.
Also have a LiveCD for Download, but don't have everything.
Ubuntu is NOT Linux, Linux is NOT Ubuntu.
