Need help configuring samba! PLEASE

I have a dual-boot machine w/Hardy 8.04(Ultimate 1.8 x64)& XP, and 2 Windows machines. These all share an internet connection from my netgear router. One of the Window machines connects using wi-fi. All are connected to each other on a Windows home network. When I installed Hardy, I used to be able to see my Windows machines and print to the printer attached to my wife's Windows box. Recently, I don't know if it was due to an upgrade to Hardy or Win XP, I am no longer able to see any other computers from my Ubuntu box, or print. Our only printer is a Canon multi-function which is not networkable, so we have been using it through the router via my wifes computer. I need to figure this out. Is anyone able to give me a walk-thru of setting up samba. I have looked at a lot of different tutorials, and am very confused. I just want to be able to print and share files. Any help would be appreciated.

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/printing/C/printing.html should be useful
but if problems persist try checking your windows box much depends on how you configured Your network printer in Linux if using ip of windows box then check if it has changed
if using hostname make sure Linux knows how to resolve this hostname correctly.

RE:

I am able to set up my printer using LPD?LPR Host or Printer and putting the ip address of the Windows machine it's connected to. I used to be able to just connect both printer and computers (for file sharing) using Samba. I reinstalled samba and would like to completely re-do the smb .conf file, and that's where the problem lies. I don't know how to set up that file correctly for my computers. I guess I am still not understanding all the details of the setup to know what to change, or why it's not working.
