logging in as root


Im trying to install mplayer to view wmv etc in firefox, ill need to login as root to do this but when i use root as the username i get the error, system admin cannot login from this screen, how can i edit the filesystem in the gui? i can login as root in terminal but thats it.

You don't need to log in as root in Ubuntu. Open a terminal and type
Code:
sudo <whatever you want to do>
and when you are prompted for a password, use your own password.

If you want to remain logged in as root for an extended period use:
sudo su
but don't forget to exit after you have done!

if you want to install mplayer why not just
Code:
sudo apt-get install mplayer
Just make sure you have the mulitverse repository in /etc/apt/sources.list and then run "sudo apt-get update"

mulitverse repository? sudo apt-get install mplayer gives "E: Couldn't find package mplayer"

See this http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#Repositories and there's also howto mplayer for firefox.

Ok thanks for all the help guys but it tells me its playing but all i see is the mplayer icon and a blank screen after buffering, the timer is running and everything just no video

You probably need the codecs - use automatix to install. There's a link on that ubuntuguide page.

login as root:
sudo passwd root
