Issue with installing OpenOffice 4.1

Hi all,

New to the Ubuntu seen and am trying to install OpenOffice 4.1 on Ubuntu 14.04. I first uninstall libreoffice (as I was having too many issues between it and Word), then downloaded the tar.gz file from here.

I then try to open the package by typing:

Quote:
tar -xvfz Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
but I get the following error message:

Quote:
tar: z: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
I can see the package in my home directory but I don't know why it won't open and install. I am still learning the ropes so please excuse me if I missed a step.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

If it shows no such directory then there are two options. One is the file doesn't exist or you haven't entered the name of the file exactly as it is. The more likely possibility is that you ar running the command and have not changed to the proper directory in the terminal before doing so.

Thanks yancek for the response.

In terminal this is what things look like...

Quote:
dave@LapTop:~$ dir
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz Music
Desktop Pictures
Documents Public
Downloads Templates
en-GB Videos
examples.desktop wget-log
dave@LapTop:~$ tar -xvfz Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
tar: z: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
It shows the file there, but won't open it

Any ideas?

Go to your favorite package manager and install LibreOffice.

Is this not already installed?

It is better supported and is a fork developed by most of the old OO devs.

Orical got OO when they bought Sun out and neglected it. Devs left and started LibreOffice. Orical gave OO to Apache to get rid of it.

Not saying at all that Apache is not doing a good job, just that they kind of had to start over with it and so are a bit behind.

There could be some different features so it could be that is what you want.

It is best, however, to install things from the native repos for any distro. If you ever want to do a version upgrade you will find this is true.

Thanks widget,

I did have LibreOffice, but found that the spell check was terrible and that converting documents to MSWord did not work. I've had better success with OpenOffice and that is why I wanted the new release. Guess I will just install 4.0 and wait until there are better instructions for OO.

Cheers

Hi, I may have a simple solution for you by flipping around the arguments! I downloaded AOO and my results are below. The successful method is what I use to untar LibreOffice.

BTW, I am surprised you are experiencing problems with LO. FYI there is a thriving mailing list which may be able to help with these matters http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/nabble/

Cheers

Thanks timl, I might just reinstall LibreOffice and go from there. I tired what you suggested and got this:

Quote:
dave@LapTop:~$ tar -vxzf Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz
tar (child): Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
Once again when I look in my home dir, the tar.gz file is there, just won't open...

I find this interesting.

How about posting the results of;
Code:
ls /home/<your user name>
While I think LibreOffice is the way to go you should be able to open a damned tarball. Something here is not copasetic.

LOL yeah that is what I figured.

here is the result of:

Quote:
dave@LapTop:~$ ls /home/dave
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz Music
Desktop Pictures
Documents Public
Downloads Templates
en-GB Videos
examples.desktop
The tar.gz is there, but doesn't seem to want to open

Hi Stranger,

I should have pointed out that I am using Fedora - hence I use an rpm installer. You need to apply

Quote:
tar -vxzf
on the deb file you quoted in post #1

Quote:
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
cheers

To be more specific;
your command calls for
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz

The file listed in your directory is
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz

This means that
Code:
dave@LapTop:~$ tar -vxzf Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz
tar (child): Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
is correct.

This looks like something I am really good at. Typos. Give them up if you can. They never work.
