OpenOffice language issue

When I open OpenOffice, the language appears to be set to catalan. I have tried changing this in the 'idiomas' section of the settings menu but all the toolbars etc... are still wrong.
I have checked the locale for system and user and it is set to use English.
I have also tried to uninstall the catalan dictionary, but it has the main program as a dependency so I cant get rid of it without getting rid of the program!
Similarly, I cant reinstall without having to select support for catalan.

Has anyone else had this problem or know how to resolve it? I have Mandrake 10.1 download edit. and the download is an English one too...

Localising OpenOffice in English rather than Catalan

Seems this problem is unresolved as yet - my Mandrakelinux 10.1 exhibits exactly the same prob.

I've now uninstalled OpenOffice and plan to attempt a new install of OO 2.0.3

Anyone out there actually resolved this?

If you have the software from OpenOffice rather than your distro, it includes a file /opt/openoffice.org2.0/share/dict/ooo/dictionary.lst. That contains a list of dictionary files which OOo loads when it starts. The files are in groups of three - THES, HYPH and DICT.

Comment out (or delete after backing up the file) the dictionaries you do not want OOo to load. I did that recently so that only the English dictionaries are listed and the software loads much faster.

I do not know whether that would help to resolve the locale issues. I will scout around for some information and come back. The setting in Tools >Options should fix the problem so I am puzzled.

Edit: Except, of course, that it would be no surprise to me if the distro's version is broken.

I found this but have not studied it:

You may need to install dictionaries:

Thx for suggestions.

Been experimenting meanwhile. Seems that no matter what language you select on install (French, Italian, etc.), the OO menu structure always appears in Catalan !

Dictionary language is changable under Control Console though.

So could be that the ISO build is corrupted, as you suggest.

I'll seek out an alternative version of the dist and have another go.
