Is there any way of getting proper OpenGL working with Intel GMA 4500MHD?

Is there any way of getting proper OpenGL working with Intel GMA 4500MHD on a laptop?

Currently on Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64. Intel Core2Duo P8400 CPU on an Acer Aspire 5735 laptop.

For some reason I thought Intel were the best supporters of Open Source graphics drivers for Linux. :/

Among other things, I am trying to get the accelerated version of GoogleMaps through Chromium, with MapsGL and WebGL enabled.

I also have an HP Touchsmart with a Nvidia card, and Google Maps (MapsGL) and WebGL work properly on Chromium.

Thanks in advance.

Alex

3D acceleration should be working out-of-the-box. It's possible that your browser just doesn't trust the OpenGL drivers for your video card and, therefore, won't let you enable WebGL. What's the output of 'glxinfo'?

Intel drivers are blacklisted in Firefox if you have Mesa below 7.10.3 installed. There is a reason for it, because these lower versions will crash.

If you have MesaLib below version 8, only OpenGL 2 is supported, which may be preventing some cool apps and games to run.

Last but not least, without libxtc_dxtn installed, you don't get S3TC texture support in Mesa, which will also break a lot of things.

Make sure, you have Mesa 8 and libxtc_dxtn and you are good to go with your Intel card.

Sorry, I am not a linux expert.

But I have another computer with the same Ubuntu version. 12.04 AMD64, that one with an Nvidia card, 9500 (I think), and WebGL and the accelerated Google Maps (MapsGL) work by default. In both computers I am using Chromium.

In this laptop with the intel card, the output of glxinfo is: (But I am not able to properly interpret it)

Hi, thanks for the answer. As you can see in my other response, it seems I am over Mesa 8

OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.2

But I still have no OpenGL activated, at least it seems since MapsGL doesn't work.

How do I install libxtc_dxtn?

Would that activate OpenGL in my computer?

Thanks.

Alex

Thanks, answer below. I forgot to click Reply, instead I used the Quick Answer box.

I still have no OpenGL.

Yes, in fact you do have OpenGL. The output of glxinfo clearly shows that you have 3D acceleration working. Perhaps what you mean to say is that you have no WebGL.

You could try the suggestion here:

Adam
Thanks for the answer and the link.

One more question, I am going to try the method from the link, but in case it goes wrong, how would I undo it?. How would do I undo the command google-chrome --enable-webgl --ignore-gpu-blacklist?

Thanks again

Alex

There's nothing to undo. It will simply launch chrome with those specific options, which tells chrome to enable webgl and ignore the fact that your GPU is blacklisted. This is not a permanent change.
