HOWTO: Install the Latest Firefox

Hi,

HOW TO INSTALL THE LATEST FIREFOX

The easiest way to upgrade Firefox to version 1.0.4 is to simply remove the current one, then Save and Install the Firefox autopackage.

1. Remove mozilla-firefox through Synaptic Package Manager.
(it will remove some other stuff, but don't worry, because they can be reinstalled using autopackage or are seldom used.)

2. Go to Autopackage Downloads --> "More Packages" --> Firefox
(Or download here --> Firefox autopackage)

3. Save the file to your Home directory.

4. Open a terminal, type: sudo ./firefox*.package and follow the instructions accordingly.

That is it! A spanking, brand new Firefox 1.0.4 with that cool foxy icon.

To transfer your Flash, Adobe Reader, Java and any other plugins:

Copy everything in /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins.

To set up Java plugin, adapt the instructions from the Unofficial Ubuntu Guide. Just remember, the Firefox autopackage is installed in /usr/lib/firefox instead of /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox.

Refer to http://autopackage.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21 as well if in doubt.

I have used Firefox 1.0.4 autopackage since it came out with no problems, and it is faster and more responsive than the Ubuntu Firefox.

It works great, and my Firefox is running just faster than the previous one.
Seems like it was only a upgrade that was necessary.
