well,

What players have you tried, and what errors, messages, or other results did you record?

Nice question, but it gives us very little to address in seeking a solution.
(Seeking for the package VLC along with any dependencies may help. Depends upon the real source of the problem.)

update wpeckham, info. I think problem is they use a differ setup, program , thatI'm not familiar with using. I found out how to play my cd now, and now hear cd I want to listen to.
But I'm still working on my DVD Video viewer, so can watch a movie off DVD. I download that Package VLC but still nothing happen yet. When I put in my DVD movie to watch it, a get a popup box saying, I need to download a Gstreamer Element dvdpu,& Gstreamer rsn dvd bin, it get confusing where to find it, in package manager, and try look up on internet, they have too many to choose from. Don't know still what to do, but call back the place where I brought it from my computer, see what his opion what to do?

Thank cascade9, you took care of my problem here.
My biggest problem with package Manager, I don't know what or which the best package to choose from, or install, for what program to be use for. It dose get confusing when go down a long list of decoding pacage filenames, at same differ filename.or differ package to install. Is there a another way of explaining better, so got ideal what use for, or might want to use it for?
In Ubuntu they call it Synaptic, and Kubntu call their Package Manger, or Muon software program. Don't know why they call something differ in differ Linux program. Can anyone tell me, reason for all this differ name call?

Package managers

Sure bobacker,
They have different names for their package managers because they all handle different kinds of packages in different ways. It would be far more confusing if they all had the same name and did different things.

All (or nearly) Debian based Linux systems use .deb packages and some flavor of 'apt' and/or 'dpkg' command-line tools. There are gui window front-ends to those with different names that provide very similer services with somewhat different look and feel.

All (or nearly) Red-Hat (and Fedora, etc.) based system use .rpm files and the command line .rpm package tools, with 'up2date' (older) or 'yum' (more recent) easier management tools, with system front ends for gui management. (Sorry, I no longer know the names of the gui tools since I never use them.)

The other distributions (and families) either have one of these slightly modified, or one of their own (portage, etc) that uses tar.gz files and MAY compile from source during install (ala gentoo).

This diversity may be confusing at first, but you really do not have to understand all of it to succeed. You only need to know and use the ONE package manager (and perhaps ONE of the gui front-ends for your system) that your distro provides.

From what I'm playing on a music cd. I don't know if hardware problem or just not set up right. Can anyone walk me through this?
Again thank everyone in past here for all help.
Bob.
Update!
Okay I found out the problem was, well every computer have it or come with it call a sound mix or Kmix. Sometime it in bottom of your task tray. Sometime it don't show up or is hidden. In my case didn't show up. I had to type in sound mix which came up as kmix. Then you should see it. Go through everything that maybe mark mute, in check box or red X on bottom of pop up tags. once you unclick mute botton you should hear sound.
problme is solve!

Actually

That is a new problem and deserves a new thread.
I work primarily server side, and sound on the server is totally irrelevant. As a result I have never researched a problem such as you describe. Please start a new question: I am sure that someone here will have useful comments.

Question

Gee, I don't know how start a new post quetion here, I hope this is right place to start. if not let me know which of url page to follow.
here my question:
Okay I got this book from Library, on Ubuntu 11.04 some of stuff they talk about using for Ubuntu on the Desktop. Then go on talking about in chapter 3, list of stuff you can use or download.
Like Taking your Desktop for a Ride, Using your Applications, The Ubuntu File Chooser and Bookmarks, Ubuntu in Your Language, Customizing Ubuntu's look & Feel, Managing Your Files, Ubuntu & Multimedia, Moving to the next Ubuntu Release, Summary

Then brought up about Kubuntu, stuff. But notice when I try do some of stuff they explain, half of it didn't work, on Kubuntu. You can't mix Ubuntu stuff with Kubuntu, because it differ setup.

So pretty much of what talk in this book was false saying. I just wounder why would print such a book like this, try sell it to you?

This is not the right place

What you want to do is start a NEW thread, the way you started this one.

RE: that book. You have to understand that UBUNTU is a distribution, when consists of a OS kernel, GNU utilities, Applications (including the X tools that give you your windows and desktop), and distribution specific configurations.
Kubuntu is just UBUNTU with the KDE desktop and configuration. Most of the things about UBUNTU will apply to both, because they have a LOT in common. What they do NOT have in common will be the desktop interface settings, facilities, and associated products. Those parts of the UBUNTU documentation will be pretty specific to UBUNTU and to the specific version: the cooresponding data for KUBUNTU will not apply to UBUNTU for the same reason.

Either the book does not make that clear, or you missed that part.

Personally, I prefer to run my own desktop based upon LXFE or Fluxbox, so what I do for desktop and related would be TOTALLY different and I would never use those specific chapters of such a book at all. (Not what I recommend to someone with no SYSADMIN interests!)

Point being, they may have mislead you a bit, but it was not intentional and they probably do not deserve to be slammed for it. I bet they make that point more obvious in the next edition.
