Help required in configuring squidview

Hello Everybody,

I am using squid and squidview 0.71-1 on Ubuntu 8.04 -AMD machine. Squid is working fine, but squidview is not showing anything, the squidview screen is blank.

The squidview documentation said that" Squidview is a program meant to display the squid proxy server log file in a nice fashion, providing the log file is in squid's native reporting fashion."
how do i configure squid log file to be report in native reporting fashion.

Also, on one occasion when i executed squidview, i got the following error.

squidview
Making .squidview directory and links....
The squid log file doesn't exist or is of zero size.
You may need to manually adjust the symlinks in ~/.squidview
It was assumed that your access.log is at /var/log/squid/access.log
You may want to add your username to the group proxy.

I noticed that, the file log1 under ./squidview/log1 is linked to /var/log/squid/access.log
But access.log doesn't show anything and its file size is always 0. I think the access info gets logged to /var/log/squid/store.log as tail -f shows the results. I created a new link for file log1 to store.log file and checked squidview, it worked but i see only numbers in the user, points, url columns. I am wondering if store.log file is the correct file to be accessed by squidview. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,
Avinash

Hi, on my system the file is called cache.log, squid 3

sudo tail -f /var/log/squid/cache.log

Hope that helps a bit, I'm trying to find squidview for mandriva now.

Cheers, Glenn

Cache.log doesnt update anything on my system. The problem is i haven't specified the log file in squid.conf. How do i do this?

I also realized that two files gets updated simulataneously on my system when users access squid, one is store.log and store.log.1 and the info on both are different.. Now this makes things even tough!!

Coz, i have samba and LTSP users accessing the internet through squid..

Hi, It looks as though the log is off by default...

Check this page for more...

http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/config/access_log/

I have not found squidview for Mandriva, But there are source packages for it.

I'm sorry I can't help you further.

This page is a good place to start...Check your version for each, Listed at the top in red fonts.

http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/config/

All the best, Glenn

ps. Log-file rotate, when a new log file is created the old ones are all zipped and renamed, for example...

cache.log.3.gz becomes cache.log.4.gz
cache.log.2.gz becomes cache.log.3.gz
cache.log.1.gz becomes cache.log.2.gz
cache.log will become cache.log.1.gz
The new (current) file is named cache.log
