Autodetect DNS settings?

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've played around with linux (about a year) but with all the Vista hype, I decided SOMEONE had to set up a Beryl box to show off :-) Running Ubuntu 6.10 and Beryl successfully, but have problems getting online. I originally installed at school; installer detected internet settings fine and I was golden. Then I came home for break, and it couldn't resolve hostnames....the dns settings were stuck set to my school's IT dept! So, I tried bringing eth0 down and up again; it was configured for DHCP. Could ping the router fine (192.168.1.1). Eventually broke something else, reinstalled, and was fine. Now I've moved to another location, still Verizon DSL, and can't connect (not resolving names again). How can I fix this w/o a reinstall? Also, how come windows handles these changes w/o a hiccup, but Ubuntu chokes?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the loooong post

Are you running NetworkManager?

I've found that my box has to be completely powered down for DCHP to work correctly. Using shutdown leaves some things powered. For example there will likely be power on your USB ports. After shutdown use a switch on your power strip and baring that the switch on the power4 supply at the back of the box.

Not sure if I'm running network manager.

But it's working now....seems like the last reboot did it. Also, my windows DNS connection died....then reappeared. I'm beginning to suspect my DSL connection; it seems to occasionally lose it's mind.

Sorry to bother you guys with a problem that eventually went away.

Oh, for others searching, when I got back from school I had to edit /etc/resolve.conf to set up the DNS ips. But going from one verizon connection to the next, those stopped working....then started again. *shrugs*

/etc/resolve.conf is set by DCHP and the old values will be used if DCHP doesn't provide new ones. For my system a complete power down has been required for DCHP to reset the DNS IPs in resolve.conf after I've installed a new router or cable modem. I always do a total power down at night and looking at the date of resolve.conf shows today's date. Checking that date would be one way to determine if DCHP has updated your DNS IPs.
