Reading package lists... Done
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

i can see conceptually what (i think) is happening here, that the data no longer exists at these precise URLs, and so i would need to change my sources list...correct?
ok... can someone just spell out for me if this is the problem, and if so what i can change my sources file to? i just need an experienced hand on this one!
My os is working just fine besides this though.

many thanks in advance,
howard

mirrormax backports are no longer in use for any version of ubuntu (not sure about the extras) thats where your 404 is comming from. heres what my sources list looks like
Code:
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy main restricted

## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
## distribution.
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates main restricted

## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'universe'
## repository.
## N.B. software from this repository is ENTIRELY UNSUPPORTED by the Ubuntu
## team, and may not be under a free licence. Please satisfy yourself as to
## your rights to use the software. Also, please note that software in
## universe WILL NOT receive any review or updates from the Ubuntu security
## team.
 deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy universe
 deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy universe

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security main restricted

 deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security universe
 deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security universe

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy multiverse
that is for breezy but should work if you change breezy to hoary if running 5.04.
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-backports main restricted universe multiverse that is the new backport for hoary (one of them atleast)
