LXer: Ubuntu: Rolling release rumours wrong

Published at LXer:

These stories have prompted a response from Engineering Director of Ubuntu Rick Spencer. Spencer says quite clearly in his blog yesterday that "Ubuntu is not changing to a rolling release"

The one thing I would like Ubuntu to do even more so than switch to a rolling release model is ditch APT for something more bleeding-edge. In particular, a Portage-like package manager that automatically pulls the source to build from the projects' Git repositories (as well as automatically satisfy dependencies). This will help to ensure that the software is the most up-to-date it possibly can be.

I in particular would like to see Ubuntu drop APT for JHBuild and have its own moduleset (and maybe a system-wide .jhbuildrc that gives JHBuild a prefix of the root directory) or possibly a frontend to JHBuild that can work across multiple modulesets (like repo is for Git repositories).

I don't get your point. You want rolling release and a portage like package-management system. You can get both with Gentoo or Arch. Why are you in fact using Ubuntu?
By the way, I want to see you update your system using a source based OS on your netbook. How long do you think it will take to recompile Open Office or Gnome?
