WMV file does not play

I have kaffeine using xine. I installed both kaffeine and xine from third-party rpms that do not have licensing issues. (I believe both from packman.) I also installed w32codec-all.

Almost all of the files I have come across play fine. However, this one doesn't work:

Quote:
No plugin found to handle this resource (~/Desktop/bigreggiestyle.wmv)

Details:
xine: demuxer failed to start
xine: found demuxer plugin: ASF demux plugin
xine: found input plugin : file input plugin

mplayer works for .WMV. I've had my best luck with kmplayer frontend with both xine and mplayer. I keep my xine downloads uptodate by checking http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

The thing is that some .wmv files play fine. I'm going to try MPlayer for this one and see how it goes.

It may even be the wmv file is corrupted or perhaps a different version of the format. Microsoft has changed formats many times forcing users to buy new software and creating periods of inoperability with their competitors.

I can't get MPlayer to work. It says I need libmad and libmp3lame, which I couldn't find after much googling. I did find something on SuSE 9.3 that involved the Multimedia Option Packs or something.

In any case, I think it's a different version of the format, because other people have been able to see the video. Is there anything I can do about it (besides use Windows?).

You can also find the mad and lame libraries on Packman's site as you have already used it for kaffiene and xine, they might work best, he also has a version of mplayer too.

I had this problem with xine based players until I downloaded the latest codecs from the mplayer website and replaced the ones I had installed using rpms.

Thanks, guys. I'll keep this in mind, but I'll try it next week when I finish my finals.

I had the same problem when I first started with SuSE 9.3. I had installed all of the multimedia option packs, and SuSE would play .mpg and .mp3 files, but no joy on my .avi and .wmv files. I searched on the web and found that there is a site in Germany where someone has rebuilt the relevant packages from scratch, not from "crippled source" like SuSE did. If you delete your offending media players, add this site to your list of installation sources and then re-install, all is well. This is what I did, and it worked great. I hope that it may work for you:

1) Go to YaST, Software, Change Source of Installation. Select Add, then select HTTP from the drop down list
2) Add "packman.iu-bremen.de" as the server, suse/9.3 as the directory
3) Finish out of Change Source of Installation

4) Go to YaST Install and Remove Software
5) Delete (uninstall) Kaffeine, xine-lib, xine-ui
6) Install the following (Search for each one by full or partial title and then select):
- w32codecs-all
- amarok-xine
- kaffeine
- kdemultimedia30-video-xine
- libxine1
- xine-ui
- xvid
- xvid4conf
- MPlayer
- Mplayerplug-in
7) Finish out of installing the software and then reboot

This fully resolved my issues with SuSE 9.3's multimedia limitations. I hope it helps you!
