this was already explained earlier in this thread. please stop spreading misinformation. there is no personal version of suse 9.2. anything's possible but there's not likely to be one of suse 9.3 either.

"the word" from novelll directly contradicts you. i think we can all agree that novell is the more credible source of information about what suse is or isn't. it's not personal but, please, acknowledge reality and get over it.

--added the following after the original post--
apparently the proper name for what you downloaded is the suse 9.2 professional eval version... not to be confused with the live version.
details here: http://www.novell.com/products/linux...nux/index.html
and here:

I fucking DOWNLOADED the damn thing DIRECTLY FROM Novell.

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2/iso/
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2....2-FTP-DVD.iso
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2...stallation.iso

OMFG, it's actually there for anyone to download!

Yep, I must be wrong and must be imagining things. I didn't actually download that FTP-DVD.iso and burn it to DVD, boot from it, and install Suse 9.2 Personal from it!

idiot.

WRONG. Please stop spreading misinformation! (how do you like having to eat your own words, knetknight? )

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2/iso/

They do not SELL personal any more. They do provide free downloads, and they also distribute it via CDs of "evaluation versions" in magazines.

From the readme, which they have in that very same directory:

The directory ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2/iso/ :
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have the choice:

1) If you have a DVD burner, you can download the file
SUSE-Linux-9.2-FTP-DVD.iso (the file's exact size is 3363543040 Bytes!)
and burn it on a DVD to boot and install from it, just like you would
do with a DVD from a SUSE Linux 9.2 box edition.

2) If you have a CDR/RW burner, you may want to download the file
SUSE-Linux-9.2-mini-installation.iso (size: exactly 67336192 bytes),
burn it on a CD and boot from it to start the installation of the SUSE
Linux 9.2 FTP version. The advantage over option 1) is clear: You only
download the packages that you need: From the total of 3GB of the
DVD image you might only need 1GB for your desired selection of
packages to install.

Also, consult the README file in the 9.2/boot directory (same level as this
"iso" directory).

Please verify the integrity of the downloaded file(s) using the md5sum
command.

ab648822abbd89906adb66f7cddd6bc2 SUSE-Linux-9.2-FTP-DVD.iso
7d70caf05f533bd4827fa3e485667146 SUSE-Linux-9.2-mini-installation.iso

Thanks,
the ftpadmin, ftp.suse.com.

yep, you are wrong. you downloaded and installed what Novell specifically calls the 9.2 PROFESSIONAL eval version. the facts are in and they don't support you. all i ask is that you acknowledge it and stop spreading misinformation.

They simply don't name it professional any more. It's fully functional and it's just missing the commercial add-ons which come with Pro. It's the same damn thing as Personal. Do you prefer they name it that? Does it really matter that they call it an eval now?

Please stop spreading misinformation, knetknight. You're looking really silly now.

uh, yes they do.

hmm, let's see. i call it what novell calls it, you call it something you made up... for whatever reason. how am i spreading misinformation when i call it what novell calls it and you don't?

i'm not the one who looks silly here kim. you're making a claim based on a position that's embarassingly weak and then saying that "other" people are thick or silly. you're sinking here kim, time to bail.

This discussion has turned ugly. Anyway, I got the professional ftp version from a Linux Format DVD and its quite a nice distro.

What you downloaded via FTP is not SuSE personal... That's no longer being produced.

You did indeed get Suse Pro eval version :-D . The only personal edition that was available as an iso was 9.1.

One of the main differences between personal and professional -- a compiler. Did you get the development libraries/apps with your iso? I bet that you did, KimVette

Which makes it an eval version of Pro.

Umm, I may be going on-topic here, but .....

http://www.novell.com/products/linux...iew/index.html
has a list of features and way down the bottom of the page it says:
"with the mid-April product launch. "

There's also a preview here.

The development packages can be added through YaST by adding the 9.2 branch to it.

On my production boxes I run Suse 9.1 Pro and will be buying 9.3 Pro next month (or the month after once the inevitable patches are released to resolve the "D'oh!" issues).

Since we are getting closer to mid-April, does anyone know what the set date of release is yet? I'd really like to know because I'm totally excited over all the new packages in this version. I can't believe that it's only 9.3! So with this good stuff in 9.3, I can only imagine what Novell has in store for 10.0
