I have a desktop with ATI Radeon 9200. I would like to purchase SuSe 9.3. Is this card going to give SuSe a hard time?? I'm about ready to switch to Nvidia. I'd rather not spend the money, but I would rather have an easy install than spend a lot of time trying to make things work!. I had 9.1, and I could'nt get it to install very well. Finally took it out.
Thanks -- Larry
I hear ATI cards work well on Ebay. ATI has a hard time on linux, period. Suse or 200 others, it doesn't matter. I think you already know the answer to the question, but I'm not going to tell you to get Nvidia.
I'll just tell you that Nvidia just works when you buy it. And that ATI has driver petitions when you buy it.
Well you can get ATi to work, I mean I have my R9700Pro running on a SuSE9.2 box and I'm practically a linux n00b. However, the only thing (that I know of right now) that doesn't work properly for me are the Composite extension. The transparency and dropshadows fubars my video totally, but so what, I just wont use it I guess. I've contemplated switching over to nVidia, and my next comp will have a nVidia card (almost positive) but for now, this 9700 is doing its job so hey, I'm happy. It's more work, but it's definitely not impossible.
If you have a card that the free radeon driver supports, it's quite easy. And you even get a level of acceleration (3d). But you have to go through some pain sometimes if you want the latest and greatest to work well. Nvidia's not perfect either, but they seem to care a bit more (just a little bit more).
