Suse 10.1 and I believe is X trouble

Hello all. Well last night I installed Suse 10.1. The installation went great no troubles at all. Well once the installation gets done and every thing I noticed X was acting strange. I go and logon then out of know where I'm back at the login screen. Then I make it into the windows manager (any, kde, gnome, blackbox) and I open a program like kmix and out of know where it logs me off and i'm back at the login screen. Then I open Firefox or opera or gedit or just a random program it locks up. So I thought this must be a driver issue and I went and downloaded the Nvidia driver. Well takes around 5 download tries because each time I go to install it it complains about check sum error. Where after I finaly download a good version I install it then configure it with Sax then now even more trouble happeneds. The locking up and random log offs still happen but a new thing. X does not want to boot 50% of the time now and the only way to get it to boot is by doing startx but then once I am in 90% it locks up after opening any program. I installed Suse 10.1 2 times already and it keeps doing this. Here is my specs:

AMD 3500+
2GB of Cosair XMS Pro
Evga 6800GT Pci-Express
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
ATI TV Wonder Pro TV Card
Asus SLI Deluxe
120GB Maxtor IDE HD <-- with windows
120GB WD Sata HD <-- Suse
Keybored
Razor Copperhead 2000DPI mouse

Please help.. Ill bake all of you guys some pie...

Hi orlfman,

Did you run a checksum on all the 10.1 ISOs you downloaded to make sure they are not corrupt? You may also have not burned the ISOs properly, as that has happened to me more than once - try burning the installation ISOs to disk with another CD burning application to see if that works.

It doesn't sound like a driver error to me, but more like corrupted installation disks. Try downloading them again from another mirror, or go for the unofficial DVD found on LinuxTracker. Then, install again, and it should work normally

And nice mouse - I have one as well, and they work wonders on FPSs

Cheers,

-jk

Ps. Welcome to LQ!

NVIDIA driver for ATI card?

Did I miss something? NVIDIA drive will not drive ATI video card, aand would perhaps be "not used" automagically to avoid that gummy worm.

I agree with parent that a corrupt SuSE 10.1 source CD is the likely culpret.

Well I downloaded the CD set again and it did the same thing. Then I waited till the 18th and got the DVDs and still the same thing. I got pist and went and installed Suse 10.0 and it did the same thing. Funny thing with 10.0 is that I had its DVD since Sept. and installed it on this comp plus many others with that DVD and it worked perfect. Only thing I can think of its the Sata HD is screwing up the install. I installed it on my IDE and it went fine... But once I go on my Sata every thing F*cks up. Why? Id like it to be on my Sata since its faster.

It looks like a HW / BIOS setup issue

It looks like a HW / 'BIOS setup' issue to me. Try to set the BIOS to Safe Defaults and try it over. I would also try running KANOTIX on it (again with safe BIOS settings) for a couple of hours - if it freezes, this will mean a HW issue. If it does not freeze, the problem still might be a problematic HDD.

Yes I agree. Ihad the same issue. The DVD I downloaded was corrupted. New DVD Iso fixed it right up.
