Sound control weirdness - must use Yast to get sound

Ever since I installed MPlayer, my sound system has been weird. I installed MPlayer because I, rather stupidly, couldn't figure out how to run wmv files with xine. At first, I thought I had done something else stupid and had the sound too low, or muted.

Now I've done a few experiments and this is what I've discovered. In order to get sound, the user must open the sound system set up in Yast. Nothing else needs to be done - as soon as the sound configuration opens in Yast, the sound works fine. I could live with that - if I wanted to give every user the root password.

I do not have a seperate sound card; I just use what my motherboard provides. I have a K8T Neo, which Yast seems to list correctly as a VT8233/A/8235 AC97 Audio Controller.

Oops, I suppose I should have said I'd like some advice on what to set in order to get my sound running properly.

I have to open a console, become root, press up until modprobe -r snd-cmipci comes up, enter, then press up until modprobe -v snd-cmipci comes up, enter. It is so weird. yours is strange too.

Now my sound only works when testing the sound in Yast. I guess I'll reinstall the sound drivers.
