setting up my laptop with suse

hello everyone,

I have an HP nx6110 laptop my work gave me. I partitioned the HD to install SUSE on it, along with winxp. The intsallation went fine. I used to run a linux box for a while back when suse 7.0 was out. Things have changed since then...

I work for a school district and we run a novell server. So, I decided to go with SUSE since I figured it would work nicely and natively with novell. We run groupwise, iprint, netware, and all the workstations/laptops run novell client. So, I installed SUSE 10, and got groupwise up and running with no problems. I can check my email, and forward it to my black berry.

What I cannot seem to get running right is the novell client.

I am going into the yast2 control center and then into the network services pane. Selecting novell client and running through the wizzard. Putting in our tree and my contexts. However, the service does not seem to be running and I cannot browse the network.

I guess my question is, where do I start troubleshooting this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

-tom

Try the Yast Firewall. I can not tell you how to configure it, but I am currently working on it. The firewall is set up to block ALL ports and you will not be able to browse the network. I have the Yast Firewall turned off since I go through a router with a built in firewall.

Groupwise works fine with the firewall enabled, and I disabled the firewall and still was not able to log onto the novell servers.

I guess I do not know novell quite enough to really see whats going on here?

Can anyone suggest some basic troubleshooting methods?

I went over to a winxp box thats already configured for novell and copied down its settings. Is the linux client 1.0 just bugged? Does it not work with netware server 6.5?

Thanks for the help though, I just ended up turning the firewall off. I work for a school district we have plenty of routers we are behind, and have a secure connection to the ISP.

Give this a try.........http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16101.html

The other thing I've noticed is that SLP still doesn't seem to work right. Try
the IP address of a server with a replica of root on it as the entry for the tree.

It worked for me, and several others here at the University.

Bingo!!

These two tips will get you going properly... but, it's better to configure SLP properly.. you'll be much happier.

What version of Netware are you running ? do you know what your SLP Scope(s) is/are ? and the IP addresse(s) of your SLPDA ?

Dave.

Happily running SuSE10/GW6.5.4/NCL/C1...

Oh, if you try the above Coolsolution you'll need to find the binhack thinggy somewhere other that the link in the document.. PM me and I'll email it to you.

thanks for the replies I have not got a chance to try these things out just yet.

I am running netware server 6.5
win2k3 server as well

My SLP viewer seems to work I can see the whole network.

My scope is set correctly and I have the ip of the servers set in via the novell client wizzard setup in the yast control panel.

I went ahead and added my username to the full context to see if it was a permissions issue, since we have several level of users. That did not seem to make a big difference.

I should have a bit more free time to get this going.

Also, on a side note, why the heck does groupwise not allow me to click on hyper links. I have to copy/paste into a browser. I tried to associate firefox with groupwise and that made no difference.

I did not see anything in the preferences panes either to disable/enable hyper links. Whats up with this?

So, my SLP viewer is up and running and I can see the whole network. I just need to be able to connect to our network shares so I can access network resources.

Also, since I support 52 buildings and 9000 computers we have more than just one server, i will need to reset my context sometimes when trying to troubleshoot certain things. How, can I make so I can log in and out of the novell network via gui interface? or maybe terminal command?

Like I hate to say it, but I like how windows has that novell client log in right at boot up so it logs me on with those permissions. I have different accounts and an administrator account to do certain things that require privlidges. Unfortunately I work with mostly windows people, and the ones that did mess with linux have never been further than I am now.

Is there an easy way to set this up? Right now under the yast manager under the novell client settings, I have my context to log in

so its

.tlarkin.xxx.xxx.xxx

Which is how our network is set up, where the xxx would be names of servers for the contexts.

Is there a better way to configure this?

This is a bit unusual for a normal eDir context, normally you would use a context here such as ...

tlatkin.container.container etc unless I've misunderstood what you said.

The only reason you may need to use a servers IP address is for the tree field if you're having trouble resolving the tree name (a SLP issue)

Hope this helps

You can also use the little novell icon on the 'taskbar' in Linux similiarly to that in Winderz, such as mapping drives..

well, all the primary and secondary schools are tied into the high schools, and then the administrative buildings have their own network and they are all connected together.

Its a freaking HUGE network, so thats why my context is no quite normal. I think I need to reconfigure my desktop so I get that little novell icon you are talking about. The only thing I have found is in the YAST manager and thats just to set the client up.

thanks for your replies.
