ModeLine VTotal expected

While trying to get an xdisplay on a Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP 20.1" Wide Screen
Flat Panel LCD Monitor with a native resolution of 1680x1050 and a ATI Radeon
X600 graphics board, using SuSE 9.2 I get the error message
"ModeLine VTotal expected".
What is that and where does it come from? Google was no help.

Thanks for any help or hints.

Run the gtf program to generate a new modeline.

Example on my machine:
gtf 1680 1050 56 -X
# 1680x1050 @ 56.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 60.70 kHz; pclk: 135.98 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050_56.00" 135.98 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1051 1054 1084 -HSync +Vsync

I'm not sure but I think you may need to edit it to
# 1680x1050 @ 56.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 60.70 kHz; pclk: 135.98 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050_56.00" 135.98 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1051 1054 1084 -HSync +Vsync
which deletes the ".00" from the mode line.

Then change the "1680x1050" entries to "1680x1050_56"

This is an example. Don't use my values but generate your own.

When you run the gtf program, I'll bet that the modeline will include something like "-HSync +Vsync" which your modeline is missing.

Thank you, jschiwal, for responding. I tried the modeline generated by gtf at 60Hz plus two others. One was generated at 60Hz by http://www.dkfz-heidelberg.de/spec/linux/modeline/ and the other by the Radeon card in the output /var/log/Xorg.0.log; it also stated 60Hz. However, all three generated a screen message "Cannot display this video mode, change computer display input to 1680x1050 @ 60Hz" and froze the machine!

I am beginning to suspect that the problem lies with the 64-bit version of SuSE 9.2 that I am using because it also fails to make the broadband connection although it claims that the Ethernet Network Card, the Dell Ethernet Controller, and the DSL connection are configured.

I would welcome any other suggestions.
