I use a Dell laptop Latitude D505 and have installed SuSE10.2.
All goes well except that it wont' load X server properly even though it has correctly identified monitor and card etc. Edited xorg.conf and removed all except 1024 x 768 which enabled me to go from a grey blank screen to a color desktop. However it looks like I need to move the desktop up half an inch. The horizontal is ok.
Tried SaX2, also but no luck. Tried VESA again no luck, tried laptop 1024 x 768 also. Any help appreciated. I did updates when I installed SuSE10.2, with all the latest downloads.
Try putting in your SuSE 10.2 installation CD. There is an option in other versions when you come to a screen asking if you want to Update, do a new install, etc. There is an option of "Other", then select load an installed system. Once the system loads you will then be able to modify the video settings. Make sure you test it before saving it.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have managed to get to a SaX screen with directional arrows, but I can't get it to move the screen up,or in any direction at all! From other sites I gather it may be that SuSE hasn't enabled support for these graphics in the kernel itself. I was actually running a later kernel which I compiled and had no problem with the graphics. I believe the support is in the kernel but SuSE in their wisdom haven't enabled it. Grhh.
I'm facing similar problem. At my office I have a ACER PC (having intel 965 GBF M/B with on-board graphics) on which I've installed openSUSE 10.2. I have also filled-in all the monitor related settings as provided by ACER, but the display has bias towards the left, so about 1-inch area is invisible. I know i can correct it using monitor's controlls, but then display is not right in Windows XP (i'm dual booting).
Those direction arrows (in SAX2) are not working in my case also.
Can someone suggests potential changes in xorg.conf for possible solution?
Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately as you are using a different laptop the video settings may differ. The only thing I can suggest is to try vesa as a setting as it often works. My friend also went into the BIOS and checked and increased the setting for UMA. Specify all the resolutions the laptop is capable of using, not just the one you want to use. Also try tuxmobile.org or linux-on-laptops as well as Open SuSE forums if you haven't already. Sorry I can't give you more detailed assistance.
